STEAMED SPLIT GREEN GRAM UPMA / HESARUBELE UPPITTU

Very much comforting & healthy breakfast idea during summers. It is one of our favourite. it can be made without onions as well, but we like it with onion. Its making procedure is little lenghthy….. but after all we will have that satisfaction of eating & serving a healthy breakfast ever. It tastes better if we make it more spicy.

 

 

 

        Ingredients :

  • Split green gram – 1 cup
  • Green chilli – 4 to 6
  • Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp or little less
  • Salt – as required

 

       Other ingredients :

  • Onion – 1 big ( chopped)
  • Oil – 1/2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Bengal gram – 1/2 tbsp
  • Split black gram – 1 tsp
  • Broken red chillies – 2
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • curry leaves – few
  • coriander leaves – 1 or 2 tbsp
  • Grated fresh coconut – 1/4 cup
  • Lemon juice – 1/2 to 1 tbsp

 

        PROCEDURE :

  • Soak the split green gram for 2 to 3 hours, then grind it coarsely with salt, hing & chillies adding little water
  • Pour the batter in the Idly moulds and steam it for 10 to 12 minutes
  • Once idly is done , let it cool completely, then crumble it into powder and keep aside
  • Heat oil in a pan , add mustard seeds, bengal gram, black gram, curry leaves, red chillies and onion…. and fry till onion becomes translucent
  • Add turmeric powder , moong idly crumbled powder and stir evenly add lemon juice, mix well
  • Remove from the fire, sprinkle coriander leaves & coconut
