Normally on the regular basis everyone makes ambode, a savory dish using split bengal gram only most of the times, but we can also make ambode using dried split peas/batani bele/matar dal, this also tastes equally good. So for this upcoming Ugadi festival (kannada new year day) you can prepare this savory dish. The method of making is as similar as bengal gram ambode. If not making it for the festival, I mean if you are making it on regular days, you can onion as well which makes it a masala ambode. The below mentioned quantity of ingredients yields 16 ambode of the shown size.
Ingredients :
- Batani bele/matar dal/split dried peas – 1&1/2 cups
- Whole red chillies – 10 nos., (5 byadigi (for color), 5 guntur (hot))
- Hing – 1/8 tsp
- Salt – 1 tsp
Others :
- Rice flour – 2 tbsp
- Curry leaves – 2 strings
- Sabsige soppu/dill leaves – 1/2 cup
- Ghee – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
- Oil – to deep fry
PROCEDURE :
- Rinse and soak the batani bele/dal/peas in enough water, keep it covered for 2 to 3 hours
- Then pass it through a strainer to drain all the water, add in chillies, salt and hing
- Grind into coarse paste without adding water and transfer to a bowl
- Now add in rice flour, ghee, curry leaves, finely chopped dill leaves, turmeric powder and combine everything well
- Pinch a portion and flatten it between your palms ⇒ refer here , make it round or oval shaped (I have done in both the shapes) and deep fry in hot oil till light golden color
- Remove them on the tissue paper and serve
