MASOOR PULAO/SABUT MASOOR DAL PULAO

Posted in : BEGINNERS/LEARNER'S/RECIPES, RICE DISHES| PULAV| MASALA BATH| BISIBELE BATH| CHITRANNA on by : Divya Suresh

A very simple, easy pulao recipe which includes whole gram/lentil in it. This is one of my favorite rice dish. This is a kind of basic recipe, but you can also use some other vegetables also like french beans, carrot, fresh green peas etc along with below mentioned veggies and some other preferred spices of your choice as well. Tastes superb as such but we can also serve this along with any kind of raita, of which onion+cucumber raita goes very well.

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 250 ml, serves 3 to 4 people

  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Masoor sabut dal/brown lentil – 1/2 cup
  • Water – 3 cups
  • Oil/Ghee – 1 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tbsp
  • Onion – 1 big
  • Tomato – 1 big
  • Potato – 1 big
  • Curry leaves – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – little less than 1 tbsp (adjust)
  • Red chili powder – 1 tsp (less spicy)
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Others :

  • Cinnamon stick – 1&1/2 inch piece
  • Bay leaf/tej patta – 1 big
  • Black pepper corns – 1/2 tsp
  • Cloves – 4
  • Badi elaichi/black cardamom – 1
  • Star anise – 1 big

PROCEDURE :

  • Rinse well and soak the masoor dal for 2 hours, then drain all the water
  • Gather the ingredients listed under the heading ‘others’ in a small mixie jar and grind into a coarse powder
  • Rinse the rice well, drain all the water, also cut all the three vegetables and set aside
  • Heat oil/ghee in a cooker, add in cumin seeds and ground masala powder, saute for a minute, then add in onion and saute until translucent
  • Now put red chili powder and turmeric powder, saute everything for a minute, then add in tomato, potato and rice, saute well for a minute while combining everything
  • Now add in hot water, masoor dal, salt, curry leaves and coriander leaves
  • When it starts boiling, cover the lid and give it one whistle ( one whistle is enough in my cooker, so adjust accordingly)
  • Serve as such or with any kind of raita

Today I made this pulao using sprouted masoor dal and added more veggies like french beans, carrot, green peas, potato and tomato by excluding onion – so it’s a no onion recipe, rest followed the same method

Served the pulao along with cucumber tomato raita and Rava kesari
