One more kind of sweet Pongal recipe but, this time made using beaten rice or rice flakes or Poha or avalakki.

The procedure and the other ingredients used are the same as rice-lentil Pongal.  Adding a small portion of C M C C powder ie… C – cloves, M – mace, C – cardamom (green), C – Camphor (edible) powder gives this sweet Pongal a different aroma and taste.

And besides this avalakki sihi pongal smells and tastes like temple Prasada which we get in temples across south India. I always add this powder but it is entirely optional. You can also check the salt/hot version of beaten rice/Poha/avalakki Pongal on my blog

Ingredients: measuring cup used – 200 ml

  • Beaten rice/Poha – 3/4 cup
  • Jaggery – 3/4 cup
  • Water – 1/2 cup
  • Cooked yellow lentil/moong dal – 2&1/2 cups
  • Grated dry coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Saffron strands – 1/4 tsp
  • C M C C powder – 1/4 tsp (1 tsp each of cloves, mace, green cardamom & a tiny piece of edible camphor powdered together)
  • Ghee – 3 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts – 2 tbsp
  • Raisins – 1&1/2 tbsp

PROCEDURE :

  • Heat 1/2 cup of water and dissolve jaggery in that, pass it through a strainer to remove the dust particles
  • Crush and soak the saffron strands in 1 tsp of water (saffron crushed between your fingers, leaves more colour very fast when soaked)
  • Rinse well the beaten rice, drain all the water, cover and keep it aside
  • Heat 2 tbsp of ghee in a pan, add in cashew nuts and raisins, fry till it becomes golden in colour then add in jaggery syrup and allow it to boil well
  • Now add in 1/4 tsp of CMCC powder, coconut and saffron water mix everything well
  • Now add in the cooked lentil and the rinsed beaten rice, combine everything really well and allow it to boil by stirring frequently
  • When the mixture absorbs the syrup and leaves the edges of the pan, put off the flame and add in the remaining 1 tbsp of the ghee, mix well, cover and allow it to sit for five minutes then serve
