Any kind of red coloured vegetarian rice dish fascinates me little more, than green and yellow coloured ones, no doubt I love those both colours as well …. but still I do prefer red !! And My children, when they were young used to call all the red coloured rice dishes like Puliyogare , gojjina chitranna , Kayi sasive chitranna , Pudi chitranna etc as red colour chitranna (in Kannada) meaning red coloured rice bath.

And since long time I was planning to make chitranna putting amla/Indian gooseberry/bettada nellikayi, but in red colour. Though I make simple amla chitranna and nellikayi kayi sasive chitranna , which are yellow and light green coloured ones.

By the way you should definitely check the recipe of Lemon rice – video/nimbe hannina kempu chitranna made in a different way than usual …I mean in red colour !! lol. I have both video and written recipe for this rice preparation. Do go through and let me know as well in case if you make it.

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 250 ml
  • Cooked rice – 2 to 3 cups (adjust)
  • Amla/Indian gooseberry/bettada nellikayi – 5
  • Dried whole red chilies – 8 to 10
  • Boiled water – 2 cups
Others :
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Split Bengal gram – 1 tbsp
  • Split black gram – 3/4 tbsp
  • Peanuts – 1/4 to 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Fenugreek seeds powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – to taste (I have put rock salt, you can use any)
  • Jaggery Powder – 1 tbsp (adjust)
PROCEDURE :
  • To begin with Soak the dried whole red chilies in 2 cups of boiled water, cover and set aside for 15 minutes or so
  • Meanwhile , cut the gooseberries length wise, heat oil in a pan/Kadai and fry the cut amla until slightly soft, remove from the oil on to a separate plate
  • Now to that same Pan containing oil, add in mustard seeds, bengal gram, black gram, Peanuts and when they splutter, reduce the heat to low and add in curry leaves, methi powder, turmeric powder
  • Now drain all the water and take the soaked red chilies into a mixie jar and grind coarsely, also add the sauteed gooseberries/amla, rock salt (or any salt you are using), and grind them together. Add 1 or 2 tbsp of water only if necessary
  • Add the ground paste to the Kadai, also add in jaggery and stir everything well on medium heat until everything gets combined well and also the oil oozes out slightly
  • Turn off the heat, add in the cooked rice and mix well. (You can reserve some amla mixture for later use as well) Check for the salt and add if necessary.
  • Go ahead and make this healthy, seasonal special Amla rice for this up coming Diwali festival and enjoy with your family
