Starting from simple preparation in beaten rice or rice flakes ie…..poha, we, the people of south India make varieties of dishes using beaten rice, with or without vegetables, and we call it as ‘ oggarane(tempering) avalakki(poha)’.
This is almost a regular breakfast dish in many south Indian households as it is quick and easy to prepare and a time saver as well besides being healthy. Today I’m going to share one such recipe with you all.
Besides being easy & quick to prepare, it is a very healthy breakfast dish which is fat free, heart friendly and packed with iron and other vitamins & minerals and is very filling also.

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 200 ml
- Beaten rice – 1 cup
- Tomato – 1 big
- Grated fresh coconut – 1/2 cup or less or more according to taste (optional)
- Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp
- Salt to taste
For tempering :
- Oil – 1 tbsp ( You can use more as per requirement)
- Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Green chilli – 2 to 4 (as per taste)
- Curry leaves – few
- Peanuts – 1/3 cup
- Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
PROCEDURE :
- Wash the beaten rice well in enough water, drain all the water, sprinkle required amount of salt and keep it aside covered
- Wash well and chop the tomato & green chilli
- Heat oil in a pan, add in mustard seeds, curry leaves and peanuts and stir it well
- Now add in green chilli, coriander leaves, tomato and saute it till soft
- Now add Turmeric powder, mix well, keep the heat to medium slow and add in beaten rice
- Combine everything well while stirring
- Remove from the heat and add in coconut
- Peanut poha is ready to relish
