A very old, authentic preparation made using rice flakes/Poha/avalakki. It is sweet, salty, spicy, tangy and now with added (mint/Pudina) flavor. It is always done in two ways ie using powdered rice flakes or/and whole rice flakes

The procedure followed is same in both the methods, below I have posted the pics of this dish being prepared in both the ways.

We always put our regular Saaru/Rasam powder in this, but recently I tried making saaru/rasam powder using mint leaves…hence this time I used that same saaru/rasam powder to make this tangy mint flavored poha.

This mint gojjavalakki recipe is very easy and very less time consuming to prepare, not much cooking is needed, we have to make tempering and add beaten rice soaked in tamarind water along with spice powder, salt and jaggery in it, saute it for a while and it is ready.

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 250 ml

  • Beaten rice – Up to 2 cups
  • Tamarind – 1 big lemon sized (to get 1/2 cup of tamarind water) (adjust)
  • Jaggery – 1 big piece (adjust)
  • Saaru/rasam powder – 2 tbsp (adjust)
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Grated fresh coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Coriander leaves – 1 or 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

For tempering :

  • Oil – 1 to 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Bengal gram – 1 tbsp
  • Black gram – 1/2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Peanuts – 1/2 cup
  • Whole red chilli – 2 nos.,

For Mint flavored Saaru/rasam powder :

  • Coriander seeds – 2&1/2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds – 2  tsp
  • Black pepper corns – 1/2 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Hing – 1/8 tsp
  • whole red chilli – 8 to 10 (which gives color)
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Mint leaves – 1 fist full (tightly packed)
  • Curry leaves – few

PROCEDURE :

  • Powder the beaten rice if you are using it in powdered form OR  Wash well and drain all the water from it, if you are using whole beaten rice
  • Soak the tamarind in warm water for some time, then squeeze the tamarind to get about 1/2 cup of tamarind water
  • Now take a bowl Put tamarind water, powdered beaten rice OR Washed whole beaten rice, turmeric powder, Jaggery, saaru/rasam powder and salt and mix everything well
  • Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, bengal gram, black gram, curry leaves, whole red chilli and peanuts saute it for a while
  • Now keep the fire in sim and add beaten rice mixture and mix everything well till it gets combined well
  • Now add grated coconut and coriander leaves, mix again and serve hot
