Cumin seeds electuary/Herbal jam | ಜೀರಿಗೆ ಲೇಹ್ಯ

Lehya is a kind of traditional electuary or herbal jam with a medicinal properties in it, consumed in small quantity to improve health and immunity and revitalise the body.

As mentioned above, this has to be the healthiest thing including all the healthy stuffs in it – right? right. This lehya is generally made by adding citron juice, which is available very easily in southern parts of India. But here in Gurgaon as citron is not available, I have put lemon juice. But its just either of them would do

Cumin seeds as such is popular for its innumerable health benefits. It is rich source of iron. It promotes digestion, reduces food borne infections, improves blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Some even say it aids in weight loss. It is even said that consuming cumin and lemon together aids weight loss. These are all just few, but cumin has lot lot more health benefits in it

Both lemon juice or citron juice works equally beneficial. Make it in either of any combination, it definitely turns out to be finger licking tasty. This lehya has a combination of all flavours, which in turn makes it mouth watering confection

  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 cup
  • Powdered jaggery – 1/2 cup
  • Water – 1/4 cup
  • Citron juice or Lemon juice – 1/4 cup
  • Raisins (ona drakshi) – 1/2 cup
  • Ghee – 3 tbsp
  • Cardamom powder – 1 tsp
  • In a vessel take water and jaggery powder, heat and let the jaggery dissolve completely
  • Simultaneously, heat a pan and roast the cumin seeds until it releases nice aroma on medium low heat
  • Remove from the heat, let it cool and then grind into fine powder
  • Now to the same pan put strained jaggery water, when it starts boiling add citron juice or lemon juice which ever you are using, stir well
  • Now put ground cumin seeds powder stir well
  • Take raisins in a mixie jar, pulse it couple of times to get it slightly crushed, add it also to the pan and stir everything well
  • When the mixture turns thick , ie once you see lehya consistency, put ghee and cardamom powder, stir while combining well
  • When the mixture leaves the bottom and edges of the pan that means the lehya is ready or
  • One more method is , take a spoon full of lehya onto a plate and if it doesn’t stick to your finger or plate that also means the lehya is done perfectly
  • Remove to a separate bowl or plate and let it cool completely, then transfer it to an air tight container and consume half or a tea spoon full everyday
