Yet another healthy, steamed traditional sweet dish from Karnataka, ie… beaten rice/rice flakes/flattened rice/Poha/Avalakki fudge, using jaggery, grated fresh coconut along with beaten rice.

Thick quality beaten rice is used to prepare this sweet fudge. Actually I don’t prepare this dish very often, because we prepare & consume sihi avalakki (sweet avalakki) using the same set of ingredients and that is very quick to make, where as… avalakki/poha haalbai requires a little bit of stirring and grinding as a process and more over both tastes similar !!

So once in a way only I prefer to prepare this particular dish. Goes very well, when paired with any kind of steamed dumplings. Earlier I have posted the recipe of whole wheat/Godhi haalbayi on my blog

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 200 ml
  • Avalakki/Beaten rice/Poha(thick) – 1 cup
  • Grated fresh coconut – 3/4 cup
  • Jaggery – 1 cup (adjust)
  • Cardamom powder – 1/8 tsp
PROCEDURE :
  • Rinse well and soak beaten rice/Poha in enough water for one hour
  • Then drain all the water and grind it into fine or coarse paste along with coconut & jaggery without using water
  • Heat a pan and transfer this ground paste into it and cook stirring continuously
  • Cook till it turns out like a dough and leaves the edges of the pan
  • Transfer it into a wet plate (you can also grease the plate with little ghee) and allow it to cool a bit
  • Then cut it into desired shape and serve
