The very famous street food and a healthy snack from Karnataka, which can be easily made at home is mandakki churmuri/Puffed rice snack. Yes, here the Kannada word ‘mandakki’ translates to ‘Puffed rice’. The other name for it in Kannada is ‘Puri‘
I think almost all the households in Karnataka, across the state, makes this snack without fail in their own combinations of spices and veggies as per their taste and requirement.
This is my father’s, one of the most favourite snack. During my college days, almost every weekend my mom used to make this snack to serve along with evening tea/coffee. But there is a difference in how I make this snack compared to what mom used to make. Because Mom’s method was a authentic brahmin style where as mine is influenced by places, wherever I used to relish this snack.
Then after marriage, when we shifted to Manipal, we used to relish this snack in a place, near Temple street, Udupi whenever we visited the Shri Krishna temple.

As I said earlier there are many variations of making this churmuri and today I’m here to share my way of making this healthy, yummy snack.

Ingredients : measuring cup used is 250 ml
- Puffed rice – 8 cups
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Cumin Powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander seeds powder – 1/2 tsp
- Red chili Powder (Kashmiri) – 1&1/2 tsp
- Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
- Table salt (tightly packed) – 1 tsp
Others :
- Grated carrot – 1/3 cup
- Chopped tomato – 1/2 cup
- Chopped onion – 1/2 cup
- Chopped green onion – 1/2 cup
- Grated raw mango – 1/2 cup (adjust)
- Coriander leaves – 1/4 cup
- Green chili – 1 big/1 tsp
PROCEDURE :
- In a big/wide bowl/vessel Put oil, cumin powder, Coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt and mix everything well until they blend well
- Now put the puffed rice and lightly mix really well until all the puffed rice is very well coated with the spice mixture
- Then add all the veggies one by one ie onion, tomato, carrot, green onion, coriander leaves (reserve some), green chili and give it nice mix
- Serve in the plates and sprinkle coriander leaves on the top and serve and enjoy the churmuri/mandakki/dry bhelpuri
