RAVA/RAVE PONGAL…south Indian savory special khara pongal

Yet another savory special breakfast idea using moong dal/hesarubele and semolina/rava/rave from southern parts of India… ie rave/rava huggi or khara Pongal or khichdi. Mildly spicy, suitable for winter, healthy, yummy flavorful dish served with fresh coconut chutney or authentic kayi chutney. Very simple to make but totally yummy to relish on . The below mentioned quantity of ingredients serves 4 people.
Ingredients :
- Semolina/rava/rave/sooji – 3/4 cup
- Split green gram/moong dal/hesarubele – 1/3 cup (heaped)
- Water – 4 & 3/4 cups
- Salt to taste
Others :
- Ghee – 1 tbsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Black pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
- Whole black pepper – 1/2 tsp
- Cashew nuts – 2 tbsp (broken) (optional)
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – few
- Hing – 1/4 tsp
PROCEDURE :
- Roast semolina/rava till raw smell goes and you get nice aroma, careful not to burn it
- Heat ghee in a cooker, add in all the ingredients under the heading “Others” and fry for a while
- Add in all the water and allow it to boil, add salt while boiling
- Now add in the semolina and the split green gram, when it starts boiling again, close the lid and give it one whistle
- Remove from the fire and allow it to get cooled
- Serve hot as such or with chutney
