Yellanna | Yellina anna | Sesame seeds rice |

ಎಳ್ಳನ್ನ | ಎಳ್ಳಿನ ಅನ್ನ |
The ‘yellu’ translates to sesame seeds and ‘anna’ translates to cooked rice in Kannada, ie… yellanna/yellina anna translates to cooked rice tempered with roasted and ground sesame seeds along with few other spices.
This Yellanna or Sesame seeds rice is a very easy rice preparation, which is comfortably hot because of red chilies used in this and is prepared mostly during winter season.
This is also called as yellina chitranna. Roasted sesame seeds gives this rice dish a special nutty taste besides making the dish aromatic
This rice dish is one of my personal favourite chitranna. We also prepare this chitranna definitely during Shankranthi festival. Very easy and quick to make chitranna with a very few ingredients.

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 250 ml
- Cooked rice – 3 cups
- Salt to taste
To dry roast & grind :
- White sesame seeds – 1/4 cup
- Grated fresh coconut – 5 tbsp
- Whole red chilli – 5 nos., for colour & 2 nos., hot
- Tamarind – 1/2 tbsp
- Hing – 1/4 tsp
For tempering :
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- White or black sesame seeds – 1tsp
- Bengal gram lentil – 2 tbsp
- Black gram lentil – 1 tbsp
- Peanuts – 1/3 cup
- Curry leaves – few
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
- Jaggery powder – 1 tsp (optional)
PROCEDURE :
- Dry roast all the ingredients under the heading ‘ to dry roast & grind ‘, don’t burn, allow it to cool completely and then grind coarsely by adding little water


- Heat oil in a pan, add in all the ingredients listed below the heading ‘ for tempering ‘ and allow them to splutter

- Simmer the fire and add in ground paste, required salt and saute everything well for 2 minutes, then turn off the fire

- Now add in cooked rice and salt required for the rice and combine everything well

- Yellanna/yellina anna/yellina chitranna is ready to consume
