Yet another simple and easy, healthy, quick recipe for bachelors, the quantity of which is sufficient for one person – two times or two persons – one time. Again it is the recipe drafted particularly for Manoj, so officially this is the second dish which he tried making, so I’m going to post his pic also.

We can make it plain or using only tomato or using both tomato & onion, but we like it only with tomato. Also to make it quick and simple, you can only use tomato. Below I have posted the recipe and pic of the same ie… using only tomato.

Ingredients : the measuring cup used is of 150 ml

  • Rice/akki – 1/3 cup
  • Split yellow lentil/hesarubele – 1/3 cup
  • Water – 3 cups
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Salt – 3/4 tsp

For tempering :

  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Green chilli – 1 (1 tsp)
  • Ginger – 1/2 tbsp
  • Tomato – 1 cup (chopped)
  • Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 string (optional, I add)
  • Kasoori methi (dried fenugreek leaves) – 1/2 tbsp (optional, I add)
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp (not hot/less spicy, to give only color)
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp

PROCEDURE :

  • Heat 2&1/2 cups of water in a pressure cooker (I have used 5 ltr capacity, Prestige pressure cooker here), add in rinsed lentil and rice, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and 3/4 tsp salt, stir well and allow it to boil, then cover the lid and give it two whistles

  • Heat ghee in a pan, add in cumin seeds, ginger, green chilli, coriander leaves, curry leaves and tomato and saute well for two minutes, , add in turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt, combine well

  • Now turn the fire to low and add in cooked lentil – rice mixture and remaining 1/2 cup of water

  • Keep the heat to medium and allow it to boil by stirring continuously, Sprinkle Kasoori methi and combine again well for couple of seconds and remove from the heat

  • Serve hot

OR

It can also be made in QCM (quicker cooking method). For that first heat the ghee in a pressure cooker, Put all the ingredients for tempering, saute well, Add in water and when water is rolling boiling, add in rinsed lentil + rice mixture, salt, close the lid when again it is rolling boiling by stirring well (this is very important, if you close the lid before it boils well, then the mixture will stick to the bottom of the cooker and everything will get burned) and give it two whistles.
