Multipurpose lentil powder

A kind of self created multipurpose spicy/masala lentil powder made using Pigeon Pea/arahar dal/toor dal/togaribele and whole dry chili.

Whenever I put more quantity of fresh coconut for grinding along with roasted masala for many of the dishes, I used to think something should be done to reduce the quantity of coconut I put – so thought and made this multipurpose powder in my own way

Tried out many recipes in which I put more quantity of fresh coconut by replacing with this lentil powder and it is a huge hit – I must say. I shall post all the recipes one by one, in which I have replaced coconut with the lentil powder, here on my blog.

We can add this lentil powder to any kind of curry, gojju, huli etc to thicken the dish for which we feel suitable. So let’s see how I prepared this very useful masala powder by using just 3 ingredients

  • Pigeon Pea/arahar dal/togaribele – 1&1/4 cup
  • Whole red chilli (byadigi – which gives out less hotness and more color) – 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • To begin with, cut the whole red chilies into small pieces
  • Dry roast the pigeon pea, red chilies till raw smell vanishes and turns light brown
  • Add in turmeric powder and allow the mixture to get cooled completely
  • Grind into a fine powder and store in a air tight jar and use as and when required
