Congress kadlekayi or congress Kadale beeja or spicy roasted peanut is a Coffee/Tea time snack. Roasted and de-skinned groundnut, tempered with spices & generous amount of Hing has different aroma and taste.
This is an ever popular snack in Karnataka, that too specially in Bengaluru. Its an Iyengar Bakery special Item ! Though I don’t have any idea … why it is called Congress kadlekayi !! All I know is almost everybody is its big Fan.
Though I make it at home, still whenever we visit Bengaluru we never miss to buy this….. specially from a good Iyengar Bakery. Apart from roast & de-skin process it is a simple recipe, which is also suitable for rainy season.
It is always made slightly more spicy, but you can always adjust ingredients like Red chilli powder, pepper powder & hing, as per your taste
Ingredients : measuring cup used – 250 ml
- Peanuts – 4 cups
- Oil – 1&1/2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Turmeric Powder – 2 tsp
- Red chilli Powder – 1 tbsp
- Black Pepper Powder – 1 tsp
- Hing – 1/2 tsp
- Sugar – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – 1 tbsp
- Salt – 1/2 tbsp or as per taste
PROCEDURE:
- Dry roast the Peanuts in a kadai/Pan on low heat (Do not burn), Let it cool, De-skin, then split them into two
- Heat oil add mustard seeds and let it splutter
- Add all the other ingredients one by one… stir once, Now add peanuts
- Combine everything well and saute for couple of minutes continuously on medium flame
- Remove from fire, cool and store it in a jar
- Enjoy with tea/coffee
