Tomato doddapatre tambuli is a medicinal, super cooling, summer special dish, which is supposed to be consumed at the very beginning of the meal, mixed along with small quantity of steaming hot rice and a tea spoonful of ghee
We, the people of malenadu ie western ghats of Karnataka, make tambuli with almost anything and everything like tender leaves, flowers, fruits, vegetables etc etc etc and we like to eat it at the beginning of the meal
But as far as I’m concerned, I can eat just tambuli and rice as a complete meal!. And also I don’t like tambuli that has a too-gooey consistency, I prefer it slightly thick, but you can do as per your preference
Though I haven’t yet shared the recipe for the famous and widely known Indian borage tambuli (doddapatre) yet, (I shall share soon), today I’m here to share a combined tomato and doddapatre tambuli recipe
Ingredients : measuring cup used – 200 ml
- Ghee – 1 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
- Tomato – 1 cup
- Curd, thick – 1/2 cup (adjust)
- Water – 1/2 to 1 cup (adjust)
To roast and grind :
- Ghee – 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Black pepper corn – 1/2 tsp
- Whole red chilli, byadigi – 2
- Doddapatre/Indian borage leaves – 4 to 6
- Fresh coconut – 1/4 cup
- Rock salt – 1 tsp
PROCEDURE :
- Heat 1 tsp ghee, put cumin seeds, black pepper corns, whole red chilli, doddapatre/Indian borage leaves and coconut until leaves turns soft, let it cool a bit, transfer to a mixie jar, add salt and grind into a paste

- Heat 1 tsp of ghee, put mustard seeds, curry leaves, when they splutter, put tomato chunks, saute for couple of minutes, transfer to a bowl, let it cool completely

- Now, put ground paste, water and thick curd to the same bowl, mix everything well. Adjust the consistency as per choice. However I like to keep tambuli of semi liquid consisitency but not too gooey

- Consume tomato doddapatre tambuli along with steaming hot rice at the beginning of the meal in small quantity.
- Also you can use this as an accompaniment along with anything

Actually we, the people of malenadu/western ghats of Karnataka, make tambuli with anything and everything. So I shall post all of them one by one. However, for the time being, you can check few tambuli recipes here, Like –
