Avarekayi or hyacinth beans is a famous seasonal vegetable or beans grown in Karnataka. During winter, in Bengaluru we get Avarekayi/hyacinth beans in plenty.

Obviously we make many types of dishes using avarekayi and making mixture of hithakavarebele/pressed hyacinth beans for tea/coffee time is almost like a tradition there.

But here in Gurgaon we don’t get avarekayi, people here don’t even know what it is ! But here we get fresh green peas in plenty during winter like how we get avarekayi over there

We definitely miss relishing on different dishes made using avarekayi here, though I substitute it with fresh green peas and make most of the dishes in the same method.

So it just came to my mind that why don’t I try making the same mixture by using pressed fresh green peas ? and the after effect of that thought is this crunchy savory tea/coffee time snack.

I made this pressed fresh peas mixture exactly in the same way like how we make avarekayi mixture, one of the very simple and easy peasy recipe from namma Bengaluru

HOW TO MAKE PRESSED PEAS – NOTE : Soak the Peas for 2 to 3 hours in enough water, then press each one of them keeping in between the index finger and the thumb to remove its skin. If in case you are using the avarekayi/hyacinth beans, soak the avarekayi for 6 to 8 hours or overnight, then press the beans in the same way to remove the skin.

I have a video demonstration of this recipe on my YouTube channel. And also you can find it below at the end and please let me have the feedback in case you make it. Thank you….

Ingredients : measuring cup used – 250 ml

  • Pressed fresh peas – 2 cups
  • Peanuts – 1/2 cup
  • Cashew nuts – 1/2 cup
  • Dry coconut flakes – 1/2 cup
  • Roasted gram – 1/3 cup
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder (kashmiri/less hot) – 1&1/2 tsp
  • Salt – 3/4 tsp (adjust)
  • Puffed rice – 1 cup
  • Oil – to deep fry

PROCEDURE :

  • To begin with , heat enough oil and deep fry all the pressed fresh peas by adding in small batches at a time (you can deep fry by putting it directly into the oil or you can follow my video and deep fry it using perforated ladle)
  • Also deep fry peanuts and cashew nuts and gather everything in a wide bowl
  • Now put coconut flakes, roasted gram, turmeric powder, chili powder, salt, puffed rice and combine everything well, so that everything gets coated well with spices and salt
  • Enjoy as such or along with evening tea/coffee.
